Central California has a hidden treasure at the Tejon Ranch Conservancy. It’s vast 270,000 acres encompass some of the most pristine California back country. It has a rich history from trappers and frontiersman to outlaws and stage coach lines. The ranch started with a Mexican land grant in 1843 and grew in the next decade with the purchase of three more grants by it’s founder. It’s one of the largest privately owned properties in the state to this day.
Rocky Mountain Elk were imported from Yellowstone National Park in 1966 and thrive there still today. The Conservancy has opened up the property for guided tours to experience a glimpse of this amazing piece of California history. On our visit we were lucky to see a herd of elk from a distance but also one who wandered across our path on the way back to the main gate. Majestic and glorious.
